Customs And Excise

On arriving at Caranam, we were greeted by Romulus Space Control and then Caranam Space Control. They transmitted their standard customs procedures to us. Caranam was a more secure town than a typical entry point to Romulus. The procedures indicated that we should land on a pad and then we would be beamed to the security office to be searched. No weapons of any kind were permitted in Caranam.

The customs procedures were brief but thorough. We were recommended the Cafe Remus as a place for refreshments. Leaving the Security Office we discovered that a sand storm was blowing, reducing visibility to a few metres.

Cafe Remus

The Cafe Remus was a semi-open cafe. During the sandstorm, the proprietor had erected a mild forcefield to keep out the sand. We were seated by Almak, the large Romulan owner of the cafe. He was very friendly and he enquired about our visit to Caranam. We used our cover story of selling stolen Federation replicators and Almak agreed to trial one of the replicators in his cafe.

We ate and drank our fill. There were several other military and civilian customers in the cafe. Ana was sketching on her Padd when a newcomer passed near our table and promptly left the premises.

Almak was kind enough to point out another couple of points of interest in Caranam.

We decided to split into two groups with one group returning to the ship and the second group moving on to secure rooms at the Hotel Vor T'vor.

Vor T'Vor

As we arrived at the Vor T'vor, we saw the Romulan from the cafe enter the hotel ahead of us and head into the bar. Lieutenant Mabrin spoke to the receptionist, S'Tevie, and booked several rooms. Mabrin also called back to the ship to get Subcommander Rekar to meet us at the hotel. She complained about sand in her hair but complied.

In the meantime, Ana struck up a slightly awkward conversation with the stranger who introduced herself as K'Ren. K'Ren said that she was new in town too. With her experience of espionage, Ana was able to determine that K'ren was an extremely accomplished liar. As the evening wore on, Ana visited the hotel bathrooms. K'ren quietly followed her in and spoke briefly saying that she worked for "an agency" and that she would be interested in further communication.

Dead Body

The crew all retired to their rooms in the Vor T'Vor. Thavliss ran a security sweep and discovered no listening devices. Ana discovered a note addressed to her placed on her bed.

We moved the crew between rooms and placed Subcommander Rekar in a room that we had not booked. A few moments later she returned and informed the rest of the crew that there was a dead body in her room.

Thavliss organised a forensic sweep. The room was curiously clean and the body had no identification. The crew discovered that their was foreign Romulan DNA on the body.

A discussion followed on what steps to take next. The Captain took the initiative and took the Subcommander down to the reception desk where they informed S'Tevie that there was a dead body upstairs. S'Tevie summoned the militia who immediately arrested the Captain and the Subcommander. The rest of the crew became aware of this and escaped the hotel by leaping from the windows.

And the adventure continues...
